General Information:
The first John B. Preston Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by The Botetourt County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, was held in 1985. Mr. Preston was an avid golfer and charter member of the Botetourt Country Club who took time to teach the game of golf both to men and women. Mindful of the battles Mr. Preston and his family waged against cancer (he, his wife, a son, and daughter died of cancer), Botetourt County residents have continued to support the golf tournament for the benefit of thousands of individuals in Botetourt County and across Virginia.
A similar sentiment prompted Rick Jennings, a Roanoke County golfer, to revive the Roanoke-based American Cancer Society Championship. The 2000 tournament, the first in five years, was a success and is expected to grow as Roanoke Valley golfers enthusiastically show their support.
In a further show of concern, golfers in Botetourt and Roanoke have joined together to launch the dual-site Golf Against Cancer Championship. One tournament will be held at Botetourt Country Club; a second at Hunting Hills Country Club in Roanoke County. The Committee's vision is to host multiple American Cancer Society Championships throughout the region and develop one of the largest multi-course events in the country.
Increased awareness and increased funding will benefit those touched by cancer -- our parents, our children, our spouses, our friends our neighbors, and ourselves.

The National American Cancer Society Golf Championship has mushroomed from a small collection of local tournaments in 1973 to the world's largest amateur golf tournament. Annually, more than 700 local championship tournaments are held across the country involving nearly 130,000 golfers.
The winning team in each flight/division (both men and women) at both the Botetourt Country Club and Hunting Hills Country Club will qualify to compete at the American Cancer Society Mid-Atlantic Division Championship.
The number of teams entered at the local tournament will determine additional teams qualifying for the Division Championship. The Men's Championship will take place August 19-21 and the Women's Championship will be held August 26-28. Locally, more than 60 tournaments are held in units across the Division. Winning teams, comprised of over 650 golfers, compete for the right to advance to the National American Cancer Society Golf Championship.
The American Cancer Society National Golf Championship will be held at PGA
West & La Quinta, La Quinta, California, November 30 and December 1, 2001.
